Featured Friday: Help Someone
Topic: Featured Friday

This week's Featured Site will make you want to get out and help someone which just happens to be the name of the site: HelpSomeone.us. Help Someone is dedicated to volunteering in the Owensboro, KY area - but you don't have to be from Kentucky to get some helpful information out of their site!

Help Someone not only shares names and locations of local charities in Kentucky, but they also give great ideas for those looking to volunteer, not knowing exactly what they want to do yet. Kids and teens can also come to the site to find a whole list of activities specific to what they can do to help with limited resources.

Help Someone has their own radio station called Heart Strings which showcases local musicians and they will soon be launching Unsung TV as well! We would like to congratulate Help Someone for not only making a great site that is easy to navigate and really showcases how you can use all of the different add-ons well, but we would like to say great job with all of the volunteering and charity work that they are doing. Keep up the great work, Help Someone!

Posting Videos Through the Media Manager
Topic: Builder Updates

We have recently been receiving some information from members that their videos are not working after they post them through the Media Manager. They will stream fine when they are in edit or preview mode but when the site is published, the video will display looking something like this:

If you have videos on your site, please check your published site to make sure that they are working correctly. Also, if your videos are displaying this error message, double check that they have been uploaded in one of the appropriate formats (.avi, .flv, .mov, .mp4, .mpg, or .wmv).

Our engineers are looking into the problem and are trying to solve it as quickly as possible. If you have important videos on your site that need to be viewed, one possible step you can take is to display them with our YouTube add-on while the Media Manager problem is being resolved.

All you need to use the YouTube add-on is a YouTube account which is free and easy to get. Upload your video to your YouTube site, grab the URL, and then paste it into the Video Page URL field in the add-on's edit screen. The video will display with the title across the top while it is paused and the YouTube logo in the bottom right:

We will update you on the status of the Media Manager video as soon as we have a fix.

New Add-ons! Weather & Weather Zombie
Topic: Add-ons

Our ever-expanding library of add-ons added two new members today: the Weather add-on and the Weather Zombie add-on. Now you can share the weather from your hometown, where you are on vacation, or wherever you choose with your visitors and you can even give it an undead twist. In the editor, you can choose your city, region (for the US & Canada), and country plus you can select your unit of measuremet as either Fahrenheit or Celsius. Add additional weather add-ons to show different locations or allow your visitors to search for their own locations by displaying the search bar.

Your add-on will look different depending on where you place it on your page (in the content, sidebar, header, or footer). Here's an example of the weather add-on placed in the content section:

You'll see the last time that the weather was updated, the high and low for the day, current conditions, and the times for sunrise and sunset.

The Weather Zombie add-on has the same editor and displays the same information but is a little more animated. Depending on your weather, your zombie forecaster will change! For example, today's a scorcher in Cairo so...

The Zombie is dressed for the weather! Whereas in Fairbanks, AK, the weather is much nicer...

So the Zombie changes for the occassion.

Whichever add-on you choose, either makes a great addition to your site and keeps you updated at the same time!

Featured Friday: The Dire Wolf Project
Topic: Featured Friday

Today's featured site is a must see as well as a must read: The Dire Wolf Project. An incredible source of information about the initiative to breed a domesticated dog breed (the American Alsatian) to have the look of the prehistoric Dire Wolf. The site gives an abundance of information about the history of the Dire Wolf and how it compares to wolf breeds today. For those of you who are HBO fans, they even give an explanation of the representation of the Dire Wolf in the show Game of Thrones which has sparked an incredible amount of interest in the wolf.

So aside from the site being a great source of information, why was it selected to be highlighted this week? The Dire Wolf Project shows that not only do they understand their wolves, but they understand what makes for good web design. They have taken a Webon template and done some basic CSS tweaking to make it look like the template was designed specifically for them. They have made a great use of multiple add-ons, including PayPal, Polls, and Facebook and their site is easy to navigate (not to mention the pictures of the American Alsatians are incredibly adorable!).

Next time you're watching Game of Thrones or just thinking about how awesome it would be to own a pet wolf, check up on The Dire Wolf Project and see how they're doing! With your help, maybe you could be bringing home your own American Alsatian some day soon!

If you would like to submit your own site to be featured in our Featured Friday highlight, fill out our submission form!

Featured Friday: Diane Vallere
Topic: Featured Friday

This week's Featured Friday website has the ability to appeal to the interests of two seemingly very different interest groups: murder mystery lovers and fashionistas. What kind of website is this? Diane Vallere's page about her love of fashion and job in the fashion industry as well as her moonlighting as an acclaimed "Chick Lit" mystery author. Sounds like Diane has a lot on her plate!

Not only does Diane have the most awesome sounding jobs - fashion buyer and jetsetter by day, murder mystery writer by night - but her website is amazing as well! Her navigation buttons are fantastic and she keeps her grey/purple/pink color scheme throughout her website. The site is clean and simple yet interesting and appealing which made it a great contender to be featured today.

You can check out Diane's website at www.dianevallere.com. If you want a chance to have your website featured next week, submit your site to http://spotlight-site.tripod.com/. Congratulations Diane! And good luck to our future Tripod highlights!

New: Google +1 Add-on!
Topic: Add-ons

Easily get recommendations on your site by adding the Google +1 add-on. Your visitors can click this simple button and with their Google accounts, they can recommend your website. The count will show up on your page as well as Google search. You can put this button on one page of your website, or all of them!

What does Google have to say about it:

"The +1 button is shorthand for "this is pretty cool" or "you should check this out."

Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1's can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search." http://www.google.com/+1/button/

Here's an example of what a site looks like on Google search with a +1 button next to it:

And after people click your add-on, the number of people who have +1'd it will show up in Google search like this:

So place this latest add-on on your page and stay on the lookout for up and coming add-ons to make your site even better!
